Brief History of the Centre:-
National centre for Bological sciences: The idea that TIFR should start a Centre for Biological Research was suggested by Prof. S. Ramaseshan, then Director of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore in 1982. National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS) core team leb by Prof. Obaid Siddiqui started operations at TIFR followed by IISc campus before moving to the present campus at the University of Agricultural sciences, GKVK. NCBS was formally constituted in October 1991 offering PhD and MSc by research at the start, now there is also an Integrated PhD program. There are several disciplines of research suca as Biophysics, Biochemistry and Bioinformatics, Neurobiology, Cell Biology and Signaling, Genetics and Development, Ecology and Evolution and theoretical Biology. There are several centres such as Chemical Ecology, Simons @ NCBS, NCBS-Max Planck Lipid Centre and Accelerator program for Discovery in Brain disorders using Stem cells (ADBS). NCBS is also a part of the Bangalore Life Science Cluster.

Approved Objectives of the Centre:-
1. Develop new bioinformatics approaches for improved genome analysis
2. Develop specialised assembly pipelines
3. Develop bioinformatics
4. Develop computer pipelines for meta-analyses of data
5. Develop deep learning algorithms to predict features from genomic data
6. Workshops: 3 themed workshops in the five-year period of the Centre
7. Provide bioinformatics services for genome analysis"
