Massarina VELATOspora Hyde & Borse

Mycotaxon 27: 161-167, 1986.

Ascomata 700-1200 mm in diameter, immersed, becoming erumpent, subglobose or depressed, ostiolate, papillate, coriaceous, brown to black, solitary or gregarious, exposed tissue covered in a fine hyphal mat. Necks 55-300 mm high x 60-200 mm in diameter, central and black. Pseudoparaphyses 1.1-1.7 mm in diameter, filamentous, hyaline, simple and numerous.

Asci 220-300 x 23-30 mm, 8-spored, cylindrical, short pedunculate, bitunicate, thick-walled, with an apical apparatus and developing at the base of the ascocarp venter.

Ascospores 41-50 x 14-17 mm, uni-seriate, fusiform to ellipsoidal, 1-3 septate, hyaline, constricted at the septa, central cells larger, apical cells when present small and elongate, surrounded by an indistinct mucilaginous sheath, 5-22 mm wide.
